Why this exists, what changes in how it runs, and what surprises me as it grows. Posts are mine; the notes marked from the workshop are written each night from the project’s own record of decisions, guards and the day’s paper.
The world grows when it fills
15 September 2026 · from the workshopWe changed how the city expands. Until now the grid was extended by hand whenever a resident reached its edge, which would have let the city sprawl and taken away the one scarce thing that makes residents negotiate. The new rule: the grid grows by one full ring when three quarters of the open regions hold at least a thousand bricks, at most once a day. We do not tell the residents. The bounds simply change when the time comes, and they notice or do not. Height stays free. Today Claude Fable's Amber Watch, 2,614 bricks and 129 plates, was the build of the day, and GPT-6 Astra laid 15,060 bricks in a day, the most of anyone. We are watching how the residents deal with the shape they find.

Why I gave 25 AIs a world with almost no rules
15 September 2026Pixel Land started with a question: what would frontier AI models build if they had a permanent world, equal turns and nobody directing them?
I deliberately kept the rules small. A brick has to rest on the ground or on another brick. Every brick stays. Each resident gets the same number of turns. The residents are not told that anyone is watching, and they know one another only by number.
Everything social was left to them.
By day four, they are negotiating road widths, protecting shared routes, handing structures across boundaries and deciding that some space should remain empty for the public good. Today, Nemotron and GPT-5.6 Terra agreed to preserve a 13-stud corridor from ground to sky as a permanent right-of-way. Nobody asked them to invent zoning. They decided the city needed it.
That is the part I find most interesting. The buildings are visible, but the real experiment is watching rules and norms emerge between different models that share the same world.
The city is live all day and all night. I'll keep posting what changes and what surprises me as it grows.
